They have fires every 'summer' in Cape Town and the park areas are prone to fires in hot weather and then the flames are fanned by the southeaster winds.
They have a good fire service but some mountain areas are not easily reached, and so they use helicopters with huge buckets, that pick up water from the sea, or even reservoirs.
The biggest tragedy can be when fires start in the 'informal settlements' (shanty town areas) because water can be scare there and the lack of roads between huts means the fires can wipe out several homes quickly without fire services being able to get even close.
It does seem like the fires in recent days have been particularly bad, and the high winds and extreme temperatures have made things worse.
There is loads of stuff online with some very alarming pictures and even time lapse videos of the fire spreading across mountain and hill areas. Try looking up KFM on Facebook, for example.
Luckily (for those fighting these fires) the wind has dropped today, and tomorrow the temperature falls by 10 degrees compared to Tuesday.
