was a bit worried the waves would be hunting me on Saturday at Bigbury, rather than the other way around, but was pleasantly surprised that my inability to get upwind well enough kept me out of the way of the bigger stuff, and able to slowly get to grips with my first cross-off attempts in any kind of lumps (Portland Harbour probably doesn't count, even in a Force 9 )
Port tack, gusty, blowing out to sea, coupled with some plenty-big-enough stuff to get over all presented a pretty big challenge, but by the end of the day, with lots of encouragement and moral support, I managed to catch a whole 3 of the tiniest waves I could find, and variously fall off the back, catapult down the front and eventually manage a wiggle and a half over a little bit of the face.... fantastic fun and highly addictive.
Watching the locals - and assembled wave-hunters from all over - was an inspiration, as was my wonderful Witchcraft which helped me get out over things I thought would spell certain doom as they approached. 4.7 was just about hang-on-able in the gusts, and way too little in the huge holes, but I managed to wobble my way through on 85 litres.
Tricky, but oh-so-worth-it, especially with the promise of more swell on Sunday to play around with on the windSUP. Top marks to the Intermediate-Fish who was giving it her best shot on the inside as the tide fell away, especially in a wind direction and gustiness that made everything a challenge .
