A WHITE substance has been washed up on beaches at Hayling Island and West Sussex.

Small white balls – likely to be oil-based – have been found along the shoreline at Hayling and West Wittering.

Beaches will remain open, but councils are advising dog-walkers to take extra care.

A statement from Chichester District Council said: ‘These are small white balls which are likely to be natural emulsified oils and organic matter, which are commonly washed up on beaches following stormy sea weather.

‘As a precaution, Chichester District Council is advising people not to touch the items or allow pets to eat them.

‘The council will continue to monitor the situation over the weekend. The beaches remain open as usual.’
