Friday 16 Nov
Excellent last day on Maui with high surf warnings and a 16 second period for the swell. Ho'okipa was well over mast high and outside the kit hire insurance cover so we opted for Lowers at Kanaha. The wind was quite flukey but filled in for a solid 2 hour window mid afternoon making the Goya 84 Quad and 5.3 Eclipse plenty to take advantage of the mast high sets. It was very crowded given the dearth of swell since we arrived but it was a friendly atmosphere sharing waves with windsurfers and kitesurfers alike. I was very happy with the logo high waves I caught an ended up with a few long treks back upwind. Turtles were optional.
Ricardo Campello was out with what I assume was NP prototype unmarked sail and JP board along with Philip Koster and a few local pros showing us how to catch the big waves. All rounded off with a nice meal in the Flat Bread Restaurant in Paia with Owen Wilson adding the celebrity presence.

Nice report IainO, where did you hire gear from? I'm there in April for two weeks and have got to decide if I take kit or hire.

I hired from http://www.mauiwindsurfcompany.com/ and took up the $8 per day insurance which covers you for everything except Ho'okipa when there's a high surf warning. It's ideally located on the way to Kanaha and they are very accommodating for kit changes and breakages. Guy Cribb gives a high recommendation as he uses them all the time in Maui.
