I need to know by midday today (Tuesday) what the weather is going to be like this Thursday between 7am and 12 midday in Bournemouth. It's not for windsurfing, but a publicity event to promote the town. The forecasts seem to be mixed, so wondered if Basher is keeping his usual keen eye on the charts.

We need sunshine and light winds. A few clouds won't be a problem, but rain wouldn't do at all.

Basher, I humbly ask your advice.

Well for the next few we-don't-care-because-we're-in-the-office days, low pressure dominates and the wonderful word 'unsettled' seems to be involved in most forecasts, especially for the earlier part. No doubt Billyboy et al will taunt the rest of us with tales of a windy week. The all-important weekendy bit is much harder to call though. There's an evil Azores high out there, and the lows forecast around the UK look smaller and less well defined (if that's the right terminology). Still, should be a good week for those who can get out Monday to Friday. Just don't rub it in too much chaps.

So, Thursday the other side of the week, but looking nuking on Thursday. Mega strong SSW should blow up some monstruous waves for the prime sarf east preferred wave amphitheatres of awesomeness, and backing WSW and becoming more manageable on Friday could see some fantastic wave options for all those who can get out.

my only question is this:
Teerev, is Friday looking like epic dawnie or dusky sessions at Tidemills, or is the tide not quite there?

Still chilly this week but warming up a bit by the weekend at last. We've also the spring Bank Holiday weekend to look forwards to – which seems odd as it still feels like late winter here.

This week starts with some wind today and ends with a bit of wind on Friday – but the weekend may not produce anything unless forecasts change.
Check out the met office charts showing today's low, then high pressure for much of the week until a new but small low sits over England on Friday.

www.metbrief.com/EGRR.html

The front that brought marginal wind yesterday afternoon and evening rain also set up a strong wind overnight across the southeast – it's perhaps annoying to get 30mph at 1am and only 20mph when you want to sail.

This departing front has cleared the Southeast now temporarily leaving a NW flow in its wake.
The breeze will stay W or NW for the west coast and it's sailable now at places like Rhosneigr but the breeze eases there as it did yesterday. There's not much wind for the southwest but in the eastern Channel we should see the brisk NW wind back to W then WSW for the afternoon, pepping up again to about 20mph.

On a selfish note, I'm hoping to sail on a 5.2 this afternoon, meaning we get a bit more than yesterday here.
My local BBC forecast for Brighton has wind all afternoon with a peak of 19mph for 4pm – and that's an inland value so it may reach say 22mph average on the water.
It helps that the Jet Stream is overhead today:
http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?a...etstream;sess=

The wind pattern in the southeast will appear to the naive that this is a seabreeze – when in fact it's mostly gradient wind. But that's not to say we won't be looking for local add-on effects to get us on even smaller sails.
We should indeed be in the 'sea breeze season' by now, but the air temperature remains cold and cloud is forecast for the afternoon as well. That said, the cold but clear start should help thermal effects as morning temperatures build. A true 'seabreeze' day would see the wind back to SW but the wind may well stay at WSW this afternoon.

Check out today's strong wind warnings here:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...ecast.html#All

After today, the high pressure already mentioned should set up a NE breeze across the Southeast – possibly meaning at times good sailing conditions for east coast places like St Mary's Bay on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
If the forecast holds, then incoming low pressure on Friday means a return to SW winds for the south coast and NW winds for the west coast.

We'll need to look at the Friday detail and the weekend forecast again.

I'm out and about this morning so please forgive this shorter post than normal to start this week's weather thread.

It follows on from last week's thread anyway in that what you saw yesterday in the way of wind should more or less repeat itself today.

We start the day with wind in the Northwest and for North Wales but get out early there as the wind eases.
Further south the wind should build over the day as a front heads your way.

The Southeast gets this wind last – and for late afternoon, although there should be a build from noon.
This is mostly gradient wind and the approaching front dissipates as it reaches the southeast – it's also a warm front which tends to bring less wind than the cold front we had yesterday.
That said, the forecast is for slightly more wind than yesterday and after work sailors may find 5m weather at the beach if we are lucky. There certainly should be enough for big kit or floaty board sailing in the circa 18-22mph mark.

It's worth getting out today if you can because it then looks like the wind this week is mostly across Scotland.
Check out this Tiree forecast:
www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=140&sty=m_favo

More forecasting here later.
It's also worth noting that the weather gets quite warm this week, especially for Tuesday to Friday in the Southeast. We might just sneak a light or marginal seabreeze out of Wednesday's chart.
